One crucial step that many people overlook is using primer. Primer is an essential component of any painting project, whether you’re painting a single room or your entire home, primer will help you achieve a professional-looking finish.

What is Primer?

Primer is a preparatory coating that is applied to surfaces before painting. It is typically a white or off-white color, but it can also come in other colors to help with paint coverage. Primer is formulated to create a smooth, consistent surface for paint to adhere to, and it can help to cover up imperfections, such as stains, marks, or previous paint colors.

Benefits of Using Primer

Improved Adhesion

One of the most important benefits of using primer is that it can improve adhesion. Paint can have difficulty adhering to certain surfaces, such as wood, metal, or previously painted surfaces. Primer creates a surface that the paint can grip onto, which can help to prevent peeling, cracking, or flaking over time. This is particularly important if you’re painting a surface that is likely to be exposed to moisture or other elements.

Increased Durability

Another benefit of using primer is that it can increase the durability of your paint job. Primer is formulated to create a strong foundation for paint, which can help to protect the underlying surface from damage. It can also help to prevent the paint from fading or yellowing over time, especially if the surface is exposed to direct sunlight.

Improved Coverage

Using primer can also improve the coverage of your paint. Primer creates a uniform surface, which can help to prevent the paint from absorbing unevenly. This can save you time and money, as you’ll need fewer coats of paint to achieve a consistent finish.

Hides Imperfections

Primer is an excellent tool for hiding imperfections, such as stains, marks, or previous paint colors. It can help to even out the surface, so the paint looks more consistent. This is particularly important if you’re painting a wall or ceiling that has been previously painted, as the underlying color can bleed through the new paint.

Cost-Effective

Using primer can be cost-effective in the long run. While it may add an extra step to your painting project, it can save you time and money by reducing the number of coats of paint you need to apply. It can also help to extend the life of your paint job, which means you won’t need to repaint as frequently.

There are several types of primer available, each designed for different surfaces and applications. Here are some of the most common types of primer:

Oil-Based Primer: Oil-based primer is a good choice for surfaces that are difficult to paint, such as wood or metal. It provides excellent adhesion and is resistant to moisture and humidity.

Water-Based Primer: Water-based primer is a popular choice for interior surfaces. It dries quickly and is easy to clean up with soap and water.

Shellac-Based Primer: Shellac-based primer is an excellent choice for covering stains and odors. It dries quickly and creates a hard, durable surface.

Multi-Purpose Primer: Multi-purpose primer is a versatile option that can be used on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, and drywall. It provides good adhesion and coverage, and is easy to apply.

How to Use Primer

Using primer is easy, but it does require some preparation. Here are some steps to follow when using primer:

Clean the surface: Before applying primer, it’s essential to clean the surface thoroughly.

Prepare the primer: Read the instructions on the primer can to ensure that you mix it correctly. Some primers require stirring or shaking before use.

Apply the primer: Using a brush or roller, apply a thin, even coat of primer to the surface. Make sure to work in small sections, and smooth out any brush strokes or roller marks. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying paint.

Sand the surface: Once the primer has dried, use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or imperfections. This will help to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.

Apply the paint: Once the primer is sanded, you can apply the paint. Make sure to use a high-quality paint brush or roller, and apply the paint in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one.

Using a primer is an essential step in any painting project. It can improve adhesion, increase durability, improve coverage, hide imperfections, and be cost-effective in the long run. There are several types of primer available, each designed for different surfaces and applications. When using primer, make sure to clean the surface thoroughly, prepare the primer correctly, apply it in thin, even coats, sand the surface, and then apply the paint. By following these steps, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that will last for years to come.
We may expect to see some fresh styles this year. Although it’s cliche, 2022 provides the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. What’s the initial action? We are giving our homes a facelift by removing the layers of expiring trends from popular color fads that have run their course. Among the highlights are: The new gray is a warm neutral, and mismatched trim is more entertaining than perfectly matched pieces. If you need some additional motivation, continue reading.

The Current Paint Color Trends We Are Ready to Ditch

These are the latest paint color trends ready to be abandoned.

More and More Gray

The longer we progress into this decade, the more definitive the answer becomes to whether or not gray is finished. Yes. Instead, try painting your walls a warmer neutral like Sherwin-Williams’ Accessible Beige, PPG’s Oyster Shell, or Valspar’s Fired Earth to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Lack of Variation in Finish Color

There will no longer be uniformity in the room’s trim or paint color. Put your walls on the same footing as the room’s trim by painting them contrasting hues. It’s simple to put into practice: if your walls are white, choose a dark color that works well with the furniture and accessories, and vice versa.

Pure White

The color white is timeless and will continue to be popular. However, its various tones are subject to cyclical fashion. Diminutive variations of white have replaced their formerly ubiquitous predecessor. Some highly recommended options include Benjamin Moore Collector’s Item, Sherwin-Williams Shoji White, and Sherwin-Williams Alabaster.

Accent Walls

After two years of being at home together, what was once a bold declaration and topic of conversation has devolved into a mere diversion. Remove it this year and paint over it for homogenous walls, or if you’re not sure, try removable wallpaper.

Millennial Pink

As predicted, one of the Pantone Color of the Year 2016 choices, Rose Quartz, is on the way out. Lighter, more modern versions of the ever-nostalgic Barbie pink are replacing the muted tones of yesteryear. Examples of these newer colors include Clare Paint’s Meet Cute and PPG’s River Rouge.

How to Determine If Old Paint Is Still Useful

There are always at least a few paint cans lying about the house. Perhaps it’s the bright red paint you bought to be daring but ultimately decided against using. Alternatively, maybe you have a half-empty can of white color that you keep around for occasional touch-ups. You can do many things with old paint, but you might be wondering if it is still good to use. Follow these procedures to see whether your old paint may still be used to determine if your color is off.

Unopened Paint

The good news is that an unopened can of properly stored paint will still be usable. Water-based acrylic and latex paints have a ten-year shelf life, whereas oil-based and alkyd paints have a fifteen-year shelf life if unopened. Paint stored unopened for a long time is still usable because the liquid-to-semi-solid ratio is preserved. This ratio changes as soon as the container is opened and the air is introduced.

If you’re going to utilize paint from a can that’s more than a few years old, you must perform a small test first. Considering how long the paint has been sitting, it may have begun to split. The contents must be mixed for at least five minutes using a paint stirrer to ensure proper blending. Put some paint on a piece of cardboard, give it a good stir, and see how it looks. If the paint seems normal and spreads quickly, you can begin painting. If the color has developed lumps or grainy fragments that won’t dissolve with stirring, its chemical composition has altered and should be thrown out.

Opened Paint

Even if the paint can see that you want to use has been opened, there is still a chance that you can use it. Paint changes its chemical composition after being subjected to air for extended periods, which is one of the reasons why old paint is sometimes unusable. You will need to open the can and give the contents a good mix before determining whether or not yours is good to eat. Before doing that, you need to be sure that the layer of thicker skin on top has been removed. You may stir the paint and then try it out on some cardboard when all this has been removed. Your paint is good to use if it applies to the surface in the usual manner. In that case, you’ll need to make another visit to the paint store.

Exposed Paint to the Weather

If you have a can of paint stored on your back porch or in your garage for several years, there is a good chance that the paint is not in the ideal condition. This is because paint cannot withstand exposure to very hot or cold temperatures. Even containers that have been wholly sealed might not be able to withstand the weather in Canada. To be sure, it is a good idea to perform the paint test outlined earlier. Remember that you can use paint as long as it is smooth, but if it is lumpy and grainy, you will need to acquire a new can of paint.

Painting is a great way to refresh and restore your home or commercial building. After you paint your favorite room, you may be left with a few extra cans of paint and primer. While it is good to keep some extra paint handy for touch-ups, you need to make sure your old paint is still usable before you begin. The last thing you want is to touch up your home with lumpy or moldy paint! So, how long does paint last? Use this guide to learn more about how to store leftover paint to extend shelf life and whether it should be used.

Does Paint Have an Expiration Date?

While paint cans don’t necessarily have an expiration date printed on them, they do eventually go bad even when stored in optimal conditions. Most water and latex-based paints have a shelf life of 2 years when stored in a cool, dry area after opening. Sealed paints can be usable for up to 10 years. Oil and alkyd-based paints can last as long as 15 years.

Paint is made with a balanced ratio of liquids and semi-solids to keep it smooth for a long period of time. It is also difficult for mold to form in unopened cans of paint, making them last longer.

The best way to see if your paint is still good is to stir it for several minutes. It isn’t uncommon for paint to separate over time, so it may look watery or off-color when you first open the container. Usable paints will be creamy and smooth after stirring, even after sitting for years. If you notice large lumps or the paint is hard, it isn’t usable anymore.

Before you start a new project with your leftover paint, you will want to test it. Either paint a very small area or a piece of cardboard and let it dry. This will help you make sure you get the finished look you want and will help you see small lumps you may have overlooked when stirring.

Should You Save Leftover Paint?

After a project, it is always a good idea to store any excess paint you may have for touch-ups later. If you chose a custom color, having some paint on hand will make matching the color easier if you need to refresh the paint in the room. Even if you plan on hiring experienced professional painters to create the room of your dreams, storing a little excess paint is a good idea.

How to Properly Store Paint

Air changes the chemical make up of most paints. Whether you are planning on storing your paint for a week or 10 years, you need to make sure it is properly sealed. When closing the can of paint, take a rag and gently hammer the metal lid closed. Be sure to wipe away any excess paint from the top of the can so that it is easy to open later. When you are ready to use the paint again, all you will need is a flathead screwdriver to pry it open.

Once the paint is sealed, you need to find a cool, dry place to store the can. Extreme heat or cold can also affect the chemical makeup of the paint. The last thing you want is for the paint to become chunky or for the color to warp!

Even though the can is tightly sealed, you should also select a storage area that won’t be exposed moisture or weather. Water surrounding or entering the metal can may promote mold growth. If you notice any signs of mold on or in the can, do not use the paint.

How Often Do I Need to Repaint My Home

Even the best quality paint doesn’t last forever. How long your paint job lasts will depend on several different factors, such as how exposed to the elements the paint is. For professional interior paint jobs, most rooms need touch ups every 5 to 7 years.

Some areas that have additional exposure to moisture or smells may need to be repainted more often. For example, most bathrooms and kitchens need to be repainted every 2 to 4 years. Areas that are rarely used, such as ceilings, won’t need to be repainted as often.

Exterior surfaces may need to be repainted frequently depending on the materials, exposure to sunlight or other weather conditions, and how vibrant you want the colors to be. Most people repaint their home exteriors every 5 to 10 years with high-quality exterior paints.

While your paint may not have a set expiration date, there are several factors that can affect its usability. Proper storage will significantly extend the shelf life of your paint so that it is ready to use for your next project.
